難得一見的天才　棚橋弘至超愛新日本

初次造訪台灣的棚橋弘至，有「新日本的王牌」之稱，當年婉拒小島聰的挖角，與一票好手帶領新日本走過低潮，堪稱新日本再起的功臣之一。

棚橋弘至於1999年出道，當年不但是備受矚目的新人，連訓練他的人都大有來頭，分別接受過藤波辰爾、武藤敬司、佐佐木健介的的指點。

棚橋弘至與武藤敬司都被喻為難得一見的天才，新日本出身的武藤敬司，當年跳槽全日本時，也曾透過小島聰向棚橋弘至招手。

武藤敬司在自傳中曾提到，2002年他閃電跳槽全日本時，先拉小島聰一起走人，而小島也有向棚橋弘至遊說，當時棚橋弘至給的答案是：「不！我喜歡新日本！」

後來棚橋弘至也打下自己的一片天，而他疑似因為劈腿，曾在2002年被擔任助理導播的女友持刀刺傷背部，當時他還自己騎車去醫院急救。

到醫院急救後，棚橋弘至失血量超過1.7公升，人體血液總量佔體重的8%，而棚橋的失血量在這8%中流失了3分之1，就醫時幾近昏迷，那之後他休養4個月才回到場上。
